GREETINGS FROM THE AMBASSADOR

One year has passed since I assumed my post as the Ambassador to Zimbabwe. I arrived on 16th September 2008, that was a day after the signing of the Global Political Agreement among the three main political parties. I still remember those days, just after my arrival in Harare, that it was rather difficult to find even a loaf of bread at the supermarket, prices of everything increased astronomically every day.

In February 2009, I attended the inauguration ceremony of the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Ministers at the State House. Since the formation of the Government of National Unity (GNU), which my Government welcomed, and introduction of multi-foreign currencies or dollarization, hyper inflation has ceased and commodities have come back to the market.

I am pleased to witness the progress made by the GNU. At the same time, I sincerely hope that the parties concerned will make further efforts towards thorough implementation of the GPA, including the restoration of the rule of law, freedom of assembly, commitment to the democratic process, respect for human rights and personal security, and to accelerate the new Constitution making process in order to bring about a more secure and prosperous Zimbabwe.
