At a signing ceremony held at the Embassy of Japan in Harare today, the Government of Japan extended a grant of eighty-eight thousand US dollars (USD 88,000) to an international NGO, Action Contre la Faim (ACF) for the implementation of the project for “Water Sanitation and Hygiene: A Sustainable Approach based on the Development of Local Management Capacity”.
His Excellency, Mr Koichi Morita, Ambassador of Japan to Zimbabwe and Mr Alexandre Le Cuziat, Head of Mission of ACF signed the agreement formalising the grant.
The grant is to be used for the rehabilitation of 55 water points in Chivi, Gutu, and Mberengwa Districts, directly benefiting approximately 12,000 people. ACF intends to increase access to potable, affordable, properly used and stored water for vulnerable rural communities through a network of community based stakeholders. A community based management approach has been adopted with a strong hygiene promotion and disease prevention component. Given the prevailing cholera outbreak, the project is set to play a positive role in the reduction of the prevalence of the disease.
The project was started in 2007 and is predominantly funded by the European Union. Speaking at the occasion, H.E. Ambassador Morita commended the partnership of the collaborative nature of the project to uplift the standard of living of rural communities.
