JAPANESE AMBASSADOR COMMISSIONS BOREHOLES

The Ambassador of Japan to Zimbabwe, His Excellency Mr Koichi Morita, today officially commissioned ten boreholes in Bulawayo City.

In November 2007, the Embassy of Japan extended a grant of USD eighty-five thousand (USD 85,000) to World Vision Zimbabwe who implemented the “Project for School Water Supply and Sanitation”

The grant was used to rehabilitate the boreholes located at the ten selected schools in the city. Workshops were also held to train stakeholders in the maintenance of the facilities in order to ensure sustainability. In the sanitation component, toilets and wash basins were also rehabilitated and pupils were taught best hygiene practices. In all, more than 20,000 pupils underwent such training.

Japan has previously partnered with World Vision in the rehabilitation of boreholes in the city. Some two years ago, the Embassy of Japan funded the rehabilitation of 32 boreholes in high density suburbs incorporating nutrition gardens at a time when the city was experiencing a severe drought.

Speaking at the occasion, H.E. Mr Morita encouraged pupils to share the knowledge they had learnt at the sanitation workshops with family and friends in light of the cholera outbreak.
