JAPANESE AMBASSADOR HANDS OVER WATER PURIFICATION EQUIPMENT TO UNICEF

At a ceremony held in Harare today, the Ambassador of Japan to Zimbabwe, His Excellency Mr Koichi Morita, handed over water purification chemicals to the Acting Country Representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Mr Roeland Monasch. Also present at the occasion were the Mayor of Harare, His Worship Mr Masunda and the Town Clerk, Dr Mahachi.

On December 26, 2008, the Government of Japan provided emergency grant aid of one million, five hundred thousand dollars (USD 1,500,000) to Zimbabwe through UNICEF as humanitarian assistance for the fight against the cholera epidemic currently affecting Zimbabwe. The grant will also be used to carry out health education programmes.

This was in response to UNICEF’s appeal, “Immediate Needs of Children and Women Affected by the Cholera Outbreak and Collapse of the Health and Education Systems” of December 8, 2008. It is expected that approximately 600,000 vulnerable children, women and men will benefit from the grant over the next six months. Hygiene kits procured under the grant have already been distributed.

Speaking at the occasion, H.E. Ambassador Morita expressed the hope that the grant will contribute effectively towards the improvement of the humanitarian situation in Zimbabwe.
