JAPANESE AMBASSADOR PARTICIPATES FOOD AID DISTRIBUTION
The Ambassador of Japan to Zimbabwe, His Excellency Mr Koichi Morita, today participated in a food aid distribution programme in Kadoma District.
In March this year, the Government of Japan extended a grant of USD one million (USD 1,000,000) to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRCRCS) in support of its project, “Zimbabwe Food Insecurity Appeal”. The project is being implemented by the Zimbabwe Red Cross Society (ZRCS) in 28 sites in eight food insecure districts.
Also present at the occasion was the Country Representative of the IFRCRCS, Dr Stephen Omollo and the Secretary General of the ZRCS, Ms Emma Kundishora.
Nearly 200,000 beneficiaries are being targeted, particularly the most vulnerable, the elderly, OVCs and those receiving HBC. There is also a water and sanitation component, including the establishment of water troughs, the protection and deepening of wells, which has witnessed the reduction of cholera cases in affected sites and the piloting of a project to promote treadle pumps.
Speaking at the occasion, H.E. Mr Morita noted that recent surveys have confirmed that 2008/09 cropping season has seen the improvement of household cereal production due to widespread rains and expressed the view we shall continue to see a gradual shift towards self-sufficiency of staple grains.
