Japan hands over Treadle Pumps to Smallholder Farmers

PRESS RELEASE
May 23, 2007

At a ceremony held in Domboshawa, Goromonzi district, today, the Ambassador of Japan to Zimbabwe, His Excellency Mr Takeo Yoshikawa, officially handed over 170 treadle pumps to Community Technology Development Trust (CTDT) for distribution to the local community. Witnessing the occasion was the local Member of Parliament, Dr Herbert Murerwa.

This is part of a total consignment of 200 pumps, the other 30 bound for Seke district. The procurement of the pumps was made possible by a grant of fifty-nine thousand, six hundred and fifty-three US dollars (USD 59,653) that Japan extended to CTDT. The project was jointly implemented by CTDT and the Food and Agricultural Organisation, FAO. The overall objective of the project is to achieve food security at the household level with surplus for sale, given the unfavourable rainfall patterns in recent years.

As part of the same project, 165 pumps were distributed in Seke district last year.
