Japan hands over Rapid HIV/AIDS Test Kits

PRESS RELEASE
May 4, 2007

At a ceremony held in Harare today the Japanese Ambassador to Zimbabwe, His Excellency Mr Takeo Yoshikawa, officially handed over rapid HIV/Aids test kits to the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare. Dr O Mugurungi, Chief Coordinator of the Aids and TB Programme, received them on behalf of the government. The donation included 26,000 sets of Determine and an equal number of Bioline, plus 1,300 sets of OraQuick, a tie-breaker.

This forms part of Japan's technical cooperation with Zimbabwe, which is implemented by the Japan International Cooperation Agency, JICA. The kits are part of Japan's contribution to Zimbabwe's fight against HIV/Aids. JICA is currently implementing a project for the Prevention of Parent to Child Transmission of HIV in Masvingo Province. This intensive and sustained project has proven to be a major success, with ever increasing numbers of mothers testing for HIV and receiving ARVs and counselling if positive.

Speaking at the occasion, HE Mr Yoshikawa expressed the hope that the donation will contribute effectively to further reducing the prevalence of HIV/Aids in Zimbabwe.
