The Ambassador of Japan to Zimbabwe, His Excellency Mr. Takeo Yoshikawa and National Director of World Vision Zimbabwe, Mr. Leslie Scott, formalised the grant at a signing ceremony at the Embassy.
The grant will be used to rehabilitate the water supply system at ten schools in high-density suburbs of Bulawayo. Moreover, different levels of the stakeholders—students, point persons and school development committees—from twenty schools will be trained through various workshops so that the community themselves can learn to keep on hygienic environment as well as to maintain the facilities.World Vision Zimbabwe rehabilitated 32 community boreholes in the same area last year.Though the project from last year ended successfully, it was thought that the school water system rehabilitation was needed to thoroughly upgrade the sanitary levels of the community. The objective of the project, this time, is to directly improve the health condition of approximately 20,000 students from twenty schools.People in the community will learn how to prevent water related diseases thus improving their standard of living.
The Embassy believes that training residents around the schools makes them more aware of the dire water situation in Bulawayo and will make them even more aware of the need to conserve water. It is also hoped that education of the children in the area will lead to the sustainability of the project in the community.
